Student Videos Capture Excitement of Run-up to National Finals and Invitational

Two student-produced videos offer a glance behind the scenes at classes preparing for the We the People National Finals and National Invitational, both being held this spring in Washington, D.C., and at George Mason University in Virginia. Get Recognized for Your Work! Apply Today for the American Civic Education Teacher Awards

Great civics teachers deserve to be recognized. That's why the Center for Civic Education, the Center on Congress at Indiana University, and the National Education Association created the American Civic Education Teacher Awards. The awards are given annually to three full-time elementary and secondary teachers of civics, government, and related fields who have demonstrated exceptional expertise, dynamism, and creativity in motivating students to learn about Congress, the Constitution, and public policy. Apply by April 1.


Teacher Resources for Black History Month and Women's History Month February is Black History Month, and the Center offers six downloadable lessons for grades 6-12 that focus on the civil rights movement and the power of nonviolence. A new lesson, "The Power of Nonviolence: Music Can Change the World," explores how music helped advance the civil rights movement. Women's History Month is celebrated in March. The Center offers a lesson plan and two activities that challenge students to think critically about the struggle for suffrage and equal rights. Peruvian Students Find Public Policy Solutions for Their Communities

The Center's Civitas International Programs partner in Peru, Instituto Peruano de Educación en Derechos Humanos y la Paz, is supporting the Project Citizen civic education program for students in ten regions of the country. In 2013, it organized a National Project Citizen Fair in Lima. Learn more.

Project Citizen in Madagascar

The University of Toliara has embarked on a project to reintroduce the Project Citizen curricular program in Madagascar. Students at the University of Toliara's PEAR Laboratory are currently working with research director Dustin Eirdosh to adapt Project Citizen into French and Malagasy. The university students will then use Project Citizen in their service-learning program, which partners with local K-12 schools to explore "The Policies of Play and Sport." Learn more.

Venezuelan Students Win International Moot Court Competition

Students from Venezuela won the International Moot Court Competition at The Hague, Netherlands, on January 21-24, 2014. The Center's Civitas International Programs partner Civitas Venezuela conducts the moot court program in Venezuela. Learn more.

Apply by April 30 for Street Law Civics & Civil Rights Institute

Street Law, Inc., is conducting a Civics & Civil Rights Institute in Washington, D.C., July 9-11, 2014. This professional development institute is open to high school social studies teachers who teach in CT, DC, DE, MA, MD, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, or VA. Participants will spend three stimulating days in downtown D.C. expanding their knowledge and learning new methods to teach about civil rights. The application deadline is April 30, 2014. In Memoriam: Norma Wright

Norma Wright was a dear friend and colleague of the Center for Civic Education for more than forty years. She passed away on February 17. We will all miss her and her wonderful approach to life and her sense of humor. A very moving obituary has been posted here.
