Delegation Visits to the Center

The Center regularly hosts delegations of educational leaders, program directors, and policymakers from countries around the world. Six leaders of youth programs in Jordan visited the Center for Civic Education in May 2013 to exchange experiences in youth participation and civic engagement. The Center for Civic Education introduced the group to its civic education materials and interactive instructional methodologies, including its Project Citizen and Foundations of Democracy programs. The leaders came to California during a three-week visit to the United States under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. 
 
On April 26, 2012, six Chinese education leaders from Changzhou city of Jiangsu Province visited the Center's main office in Woodland Hills, California to learn how the Center supports civic education programs in the United States and internationally. Center staff and Chinese counterparts engaged in discussions of the purposes of civic education in developing an informed and responsible citizenry and how school administrators can support locally-relevant civic education programs. International Delegations to NCSS

The Center organized an international delegation to the 89th National Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference in Atlanta, Georgia from November 11-15, 2009. Delegates from Serbia, Senegal, and the West Bank and Gaza participated in this event, which allowed them to foster professional working relationships and the exchange of experiences and practices with other civic leaders from the United States and around the world. During the conference, the Center’s Serbian colleague, Miljenko Dereta, participated in a Vital Issues Session on international education while Boubacar Tall from Senegal and Radmila Dudic from Serbia led a concurrent session focused on the challenges faced in implementing civic education programs in the U.S. and around the world.

India/Kazakhstan/U.S. Exchange Program

Ten delegates from India and Kazakhstan traveled to Maryland and Washington D.C. as part of the second phase of the Civic Leaders Advancing Active and Responsible Citizenship: An Exchange Program for Kazakhstan, India, and the U.S., funded by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Delegates participated in Maryland’s State Project Citizen Showcase and the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals; met with local, state, and federal government representatives from Maryland; and visited the Howard County Board of Education and the Maryland State Department of Education to learn about the state’s educational system. The third and last phase of this project brought delegations from the State of Maryland and India to Almaty, Kazakhstan.
